Tanda, cundina, san, savings circle: one idea, many names

Latino communities across the US run tandas the same way they did back home — at work, at church and among friends and neighbors, with contributions in dollars. A group agrees on an amount and a schedule, everyone pays in each round, and each round one member takes home the whole pot. Many families use it to put together a down payment, cover a big expense or save for the holidays.

If you didn't grow up with tandas, you may know the same thing as a savings circle, lending circle, money pool or, in economics, a ROSCA (rotating savings and credit association). The mechanics are identical, and TandaPlus works for all of them. Read more about what a tanda is and what it's called around the world.

An example in US dollars

Members
10
Contribution per person
$100
Payout each turn
$1,000

With 10 people putting in $100 each round, whoever's turn it is receives $1,000. Everyone gets back exactly what they put in — just all at once. There's no interest and no return: the value is in saving together and getting the lump sum on your turn. Try your own amounts and dates in the tanda calculator.

A savings circle app for your tanda in the US

  • Amounts in US dollars: choose the United States as your country and everything shows in USD.
  • US phone numbers: add members with their +1 number and reminders reach them on WhatsApp.
  • Payout schedule: every round's date worked out for you — weekly, every 15 days or monthly.
  • Payment log and history: who's paid, who hasn't and who's late, with receipts.
  • Automatic late fees and a public page: clear rules in writing and one place where everyone sees the same thing.
  • Call it what your family calls it: type "cundina", "san" or "savings circle" in your profile and the app uses that word on screens and in messages.

What TandaPlus is not

  • Not a bank or a payment app: it never receives, holds or sends money. The money stays between you and your group.
  • Not a lender: it doesn't lend, charge interest or report to credit bureaus.
  • Not an advisor: it keeps the records; it doesn't give legal or financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

Does TandaPlus work in the United States?

Yes. TandaPlus runs in the browser on any phone or computer, with nothing to download. Choose the United States as your country and your amounts show in US dollars, you can enter US phone numbers, and reminders go out to your members over WhatsApp.

Does TandaPlus hold our money or pay out the pot?

No. TandaPlus never receives, holds or transfers money. Your group keeps paying the way it already does — cash, Zelle, bank transfer, whatever you agree on — and TandaPlus keeps the record of who paid, who's late and whose turn is next. It is not a bank or a financial institution.

Is this the same as a lending circle? Will it help my credit?

The basic idea is the same: everyone contributes each period and one member receives the pot. But TandaPlus is only a record-keeping tool for your own group. It doesn't lend money, doesn't charge or pay interest and doesn't report payments to credit bureaus, so it won't affect your credit score either way.

Do my members need to install anything?

No. You run everything from your dashboard and your members get their reminders on WhatsApp. On the Pro plan you can also share a public page where they see turns, dates and rules without signing up.

How much does TandaPlus cost in the US?

Getting started is free: one active tanda with up to 10 members at no cost. The Pro plan — unlimited tandas and members, automatic late fees and WhatsApp reminders — is $149 MXN/year (Mexican pesos), paid by card from the US.
